Some digital camera manufacturers did offer the feature you're looking for in select modes (Canon, I believe, had something called "Postcard" Mode in older model point and shoots but it only at a reduced resolution. I already use digital asset management tools and can find my images fairly easily using key words, so dates are not as critical. For me, as I don't plan on throwing away the digital photos I have printed, I see no value in creating such a blaze on my images. But since you did ask: Most people I know do not consider a date covering their picture a "good feature." For most, information is not needed on the photo because it's already in the metadata. You want dates on your photos, that's fine. Silliness aside, I'm very much a "to each their own" kind of person. I'd like you to visit, say, the Art Institute of Chicago, and place a giant orange date in the lower-right corner of "Nighthawks" or "La Grande Jatte" and tell me if it improves or detracts from the artwork.
If this is really important, you may need to pay for some software solution. The application is likely powerful enough to do it but it might not be "point and click." However various Google searches have turned up other programs involving date stamp, time stamp, date imprint, etc, with respect to both photos and mac's.
